Importance of your professional network as an undocumented individual

We have all heard the saying "It's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know" and unfortunately that is true. We need to have a professional network that will advocate for us. A network that will help you open doors to opportunities you did not think were possible because of your status.

A professional network is anybody outside of your family and close friends, these are individuals you meet when you attend workshops, school teachers, college professors, organizers in your community, your classmates and even local politicians. You can connect with them on their LinkedIn account, if you don't have one yet, it's OK, it never too late to start one.

We need a professional network as undocumented individuals because they are the ones that are going to refer us to a possible client, boss or a speaking engagement. You can start by attending smaller events, invite someone so you don't feel alone. During this unprecedented times with COVID-19, sign up to webinars or social hours and connect with other individuals from the comfort of your own space.

From personal experience, when I started MG Custom Printing, I was more introverted than I am now. I started volunteering at events where I would be forced to talk to people because it was part of the volunteer job description. If I attended an event by myself, I would feel out of place and keep it to myself. That changed as I attended more events and felt confident.
