It was the summer of 2015, I had been working with a mentor to start my business with the IEWBC. She was going to have conference and she invited me to share my story as part of a panel. This individual had held me accountable for so many stages of my business plan, and I couldn't say no to her. This would be the first time I shared my story and status to a group of individuals that I had never met. I typed up the main points to make sure I stayed focused. It was difficult, and to this day it is still difficult to keep my emotions under control. My eyes wondered the room when I spoke and my hands trembled, I am sure I stuttered. I mainly focused on my accomplishments, junior college graduate, business owner and current undergrad at that time. The medium size conference room was full of a very diverse group. I managed to share what needed to be shared within my time frame. Once the panel discussion was over and opened up for audience questions, one individual stood up and thanked me. She thanked me for sharing my story and because of it, she now had a different perception of undocumented individuals.
From that day forward, I made sure to share who I was in order to bring a positive light to our undocumented community, besides, the media had already shared what we are not. I encourage you to share your story because you never know who you will inspire or whose perception you will change.
